Some audio is captured live while the actors perform. The rest may be cleaned, replaced, recreated, designed, and mixed after filming. These two areas are known as production sound and post-production sound.
Production sound focuses on recording usable audio on set, especially dialogue. Post-production sound takes those recordings and builds the complete soundtrack around them using dialogue editing, ambience, ADR, Foley, effects, music, and mixing.
The two stages have different crews, equipment, challenges, and goals, but they depend heavily on each other. Post-production can improve difficult recordings, but it cannot always rescue badly captured dialogue.

What Is Production Sound?

ADR is useful when production audio contains wind, traffic, technical noise, changed dialogue, or an unwanted background sound. However, matching the natural energy of a live performance can be challenging.
That is why filmmakers should not treat ADR as an automatic solution for careless location recording. It is an additional storytelling tool, not an excuse to ignore sound on set.
Foley, Ambience, and Effects Build the Film’s World
Many small sounds are weak, unclear, or completely missing from production recordings. Foley artists recreate details such as footsteps, clothing movement, keys, dishes, body impacts, and objects being handled.

For example, a fictional spacecraft might use elements of an engine, metal door, electrical hum, animal call, and slowed industrial machine. The final sound does not have to reproduce something real; it has to feel convincing inside the film’s world.
Final Mixing Brings Every Layer Together
After dialogue, Foley, backgrounds, effects, and music have been prepared, they are brought into the final mix. The re-recording mixer adjusts volume, tone, perspective, dynamics, and placement so the soundtrack supports the story without becoming confusing.

The relationship can be compared to cooking. Production sound gathers strong ingredients, while post-production prepares, combines, and presents them. Poor ingredients limit the final meal, but good ingredients still need skilled preparation.
Why Both Stages Must Work Together
The best workflow begins before filming. Production and post-production teams should understand any unusual requirements, including playback music, crowd scenes, visual effects, noisy locations, unusual creatures, or dialogue that may need special treatment.
Good sound reports and clearly labelled files also help post-production identify microphone channels, take numbers, technical issues, and useful alternative recordings. Communication can save hours of searching and repair.
Production sound should capture the strongest possible performance and clean source material. Post-production should then preserve that performance while creating depth, realism, rhythm, and emotion.
Neither stage should be treated as more important. A beautifully mixed soundtrack cannot fully restore a performance that was never recorded properly. Likewise, perfect dialogue alone will not create the atmosphere, scale, and detail expected from a finished film.
